I must say, whenever I’ve flown with Singapore Airlines, I’ve had a most pleasant flying experience. Curteous and efficient, the flight attendants were superb. There’s an additional bonus at Changii Airport: if you have several hours you need to spend at Changii try out their airport hotel. For me it was just what I needed after an 11-hour flight from Zurich on my way to New Zealand a few years ago. Whenever I have a Singapore vacation, I’ll check in with Singapore Airlines. Because it’s not only the destination that counts, it’s also the journey. And when the journey is pleasant you can appreciate your destination even more.

Singapore economic development journey was not paved. Today Singapore vibrant economy is considered short of a miracle. Despite the many obstacles facing them, Singapore managed to attain prosperity in a short span of time.

The island city has some four million residents. Also considered as the smallest nation in the entire Southeast Asia, most Singaporeans live in high-rise buildings and commute using public transport.

In 1819, Europeans settled in Singapore. The British East India Company, managed by Sir Stamford Raffles, created a post for spice trading. Singapore became a commercial and military center of the British Empire in Southeast Asia.

After World War II, Singapore experienced marked changes in technology and in politics. The small island-state decided to implement industrialization in the 1950s. The Singaporeans decided that it is time to separate from their role as entrepot.

The government came up with the policy to join the industrial revolution which had affected countries at that time. The economic development plans mostly revolve around providing employment opportunities to the people.

The island nation skilled workforce was a huge contribution to Singapore vibrant economy. In the 1960s, unemployment was virtually eradicated when Singapore posted the lowest unemployment rates in Asia at that time.

Singapore attained independence from Britain in 1963. Singapore merged with Malaya, Sabah, and Sarawak to be part of Malaysia. But two years later, Singapore became an independent republic.

In the 1970s labor skills and technology became the main focus of the government initiatives. Modern industries became the primary focus of the government thrust such as petrochemicals, electronics and precision machinery. Foreign ventures also began pouring in at that time, making the industrial transition faster.

The government introduced some changes in 1979. Its policy geared towards low-wage earners was changed to accommodate capital-intensive industries. The 1980s saw the growth of foreign invested industries such as computers, electronics and automotive, pharmaceuticals, optical and other growing industries.

When recession hit in 1985 to 1986, the government turned its attention to making Singapore a manufacturing and communications hub for foreign corporations.

The focus of Economic Development Board (EDB) during the 1960s was industrialization. This was based on the plans made by Dutch economist Albert Winsemius. But a shift happened towards 1990s. The Strategic Economic Plan (SEP) in 1991 was more bent on pursuing education and human resources development in order to encourage export. EDB is still focusing on the growth of the business sector in this country.

Singapore standard of living has grown tremendously through the years specifically after they achieved independence from European settlers. The foreign investments and Singapore government thrust to implement industrialization helped established a modern economy in this island state.

Currently, Singapore ranks fifth wealthiest country in the world as per GDP (PPP) per capita. The official reserves of Singapore as of January 2009 was pegged at US$170.3 billion.

Modern Singapore is definitely a marked improvement from what it used to be. It achieves milestones in its economy which provided its people the financial security they need. Singapore economic development is a product of the people vision and their determination to succeed.

There’s no ideal position in those tight chairs – that is unless you’re like the Chinese who can sleep on a bed of rocks or contortioned themselves on a children’s elephant swing….”

And here’s what he says about the Singapore Flyer:
“…New to the multi-million construction going on at the Marina Bay, the flyer stands at stunning 165m, that’s the height of a 42-storey building – that’s some 30 metres taller than the famed London Eye. Open to the public 15th of April 2008, the 28 air-conditioned capsules initially rotating in a counter-clockwise direction. In August 4, 2008 the direction was changed under the advice of Feng shui masters. For a “dollar a minute” you were treated to a 30 minute ride on a massive carousel and a brief history lesson of the city through a headset and a pie shaped pamphlet. A bit pricey, but this was the only place that provided a great 360 view of all the major landmarks and their history…”

A Little Singapore History for Your Vacation

Singapore, a small city state in South East Asia, is known as one of the world’s most prosperous countries. It has a free market economy that is highly developed, and strong international trading links.

It has the second highest per capita gross domestic product in Asia, only Japan’s per capita GDP is higher.

How did this happen when other countries in Asia have not seen such economic growth?

Already in the 14th century, Singapore’s importance in the region was established when it became an important port. This was destroyed in 1613 by Portuguese raiders.

It was in 1819 that Singapore’s modern history started with the establishment of a British port by the Englishman Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles.

The city’s importance grew rapidly as a centre for the India-China trade and also a trading post within South East Asia under British colonial rule, and it became a major port city.

After the second World War and occupation by the Japanese Empire from 1942 to 1945, Singapore again was under British control, but had increased levels of self-government. On August 9, 1965, Singapore became an independent republic, and this date is still celebrated as the country’s national day.

To counteract heavy unemployment and also a housing crisis, Singapore decided to enter a modernisation programme that established a manufacturing industry and developed public housing estates. In addition, the country invested massively in public education.

And today, visitors to Singapore can enjoy a “East meets West” city with good shopping, dining out, and plenty of relaxation and recreation.

Better vacation at Singapore or Malaysia?

Hi, my family wants to go on a very short 2 night stay at either Singapore or Malaysia. I live in Vietnam, and I want to go shopping for clothes, books, electronics, etc because Ho Chi Minh city doesn’t have as much variety and quality goods as other countries.

Which is better for shopping? For beaches? Thanks . & info on where in these places would be nice to know.

Definitely Singapore! It’s a shopper’s paradise and the food is fantastic.

As far as beaches go, I would recommend Thailand over both Singapore and Malaysia.

Singapore Telecommunications Limited, commonly referred to as SingTel, is perhaps Asia’s most leading telecommunications company. It has a combined mobile subscriber base of 216.7 million customers from its own operations and regional associates, as of counts at the end of September 2008. SingTel‘s versatility can be gleaned from its provision of different telecoms services which include ISP, IPTV, mobile phone and fixed line telephony services.

SingTel’s reach has gone beyond the small city-state’s borders as it owns shares in many regional operators, including 100% of the second largest Australian telco, Optus, which was acquired in 2000 from Cable & Wireless and other shareholders of Optus, and Bharti Airtel, the largest telco in India.

In the Singapore Exchange, SingTel is the biggest corporation, according to BBG Communications, by market capitalization listed, and is majority owned by Temasek Holdings.

History

It took many years later, specifically in 1955 for the Singapore Telephone Board to be incorporated as a statutory board with exclusive rights to operate telephone service within Singapore. What followed was a merger of STB and Telecommunications Authority of Singapore in 1974. Up until that time, STB was in charge of local services, while TAS operated the international services. 1982 saw the merger of the Postal Department with Telecoms.

SingTel was incorporated just about the early 1990s, specifically in March 1992.The company then became publicly listed in October of 1993. SingTel currently remains as Singapore’s largest IPO. It was listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange in November 1993 and on the Australian Exchange in September 2001.

To free itself from other auxiliary services, and refocus all its energy on its core telecommunications services business, SingTel streamlined its operations. It sold 60% of Singapore Post in an Initial Public Offering in May 2003. By June of the same year, SingTel rates changed and they divested its stakes to CVC Asia Pacific and J.P. Morgan Partners Asia in its Yellow Pages directory business for S$220 million.

In April 2001, SingTel was awarded a 3G licence.In July 2003, Singapore Telecommunications revealed that it has appointed Ericsson as the vendor for its 3G network in Singapore. And by February 2005, SingTel launched its commercial 3G services.
