flying direct from Auckland to Singapore takes 12 hours without a stop over.
It seems as though you can get a singapore down-town mid-week hotel room starting from about SGD79 ($US51, €32). Last time I stayed at the Traders hotel, which was quite good. Good restaurant and good swimming pool. Rooms were average size. Rooms are about SGD350.

Hi Rachel, I will be visiting Singapore in August. Since I am flying Singapore Airlines, they have something called the Singapore Stopover Holiday. You can get discounted hotels. For example I will be staying at the Peninsula Excelsior. Normally the rate runs about 180 SGD (Singapore dollars). However I am getting the room for 124 SGD even after taxes. The Singapore Stopover Holiday pass also allows you into the Botanical Gardens, Sentosa Island Resort, the zoo and their bird park for free. Go to Singapore Airlines' website and click promotions and then Singapore Stopover.
You want to stay closer to downtown Singapore. That way you do not have to pay for taxi cab fares to and from the airport. Hotels located just off Orchard Blvd. are lower in price than the ones located on Orchard Blvd.
The flight from Auckland to Singapore is about 12 hours.
Have a fun time in Singapore. I am sure you will have a good time.
